The County of San Mateo, through contract, provides Animal Control Services in the unincorporated areas of the county as well as to the residents of 20 cities located in the Bay Area. The County contracts with the nonprofit Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA to operate the Animal Shelter facility.
The new facility is focused around two simple, yet elegant central gable forms. Aesthetically the design can be described as low profile, soothing, and welcoming at a pedestrian scale. The building is a hybrid construction with the main administrative spaces built from wood stud framing with gang-nail trusses while the animal housing areas are built of concrete masonry for sound isolation and extreme durability.
The new San Mateo County Animal Shelter, located in San Mateo, is a 55,000 SF LEED certified building with 33,000 square feet of interior space, 8,000 square feet of free range indoor/outdoor access to an exercise yard, noise resistant walls to keep animals calm, a 600 square foot barn, 4 duck ponds, a 1,500 square foot maintenance/supply shop, an all-glass feral cat recovery area, and multiple sizes of animal enclosures for a variety of animals, birds, reptiles, rabbits, and wildlife. The shelter provides space for services such as lost & found intake, a state of the art spay/neuter clinic, and state-mandated animal control functions (licensing, animal public receiving, domestic animal holding, and euthanasia of severely injured animals.)
